Sorry the updates have been slow on this thing - work has kept me constantly busy, since I've been up at school updating this blog all the time, and I assure you it is not dead. This is my first post for the new year and what better way to start than post by one of everyone's favorite bands - Comadre. 

It's been a while since Comadre has released anything (I think the last thing they released was that Mixtape 5 release that contributed donations to Japan??), however, the wait has been worth it. Some blogs (Somtimes I Get Drunk at Night) are already starting to say this could be one of the best albums of the year. I don't know how true that may be (it is really good, don't get me wrong), but I still think this year will have a lot to offer. ANYWAYS, not too much to say about this album; griddy vocals, heavy riffs, and absolutely amazing production quality. This is probably the best hardcore album I've heard in a while, and everyone has to check this out if you haven't already.

This is a new split that Alaska and Oranges have put out (both bands that I have never really dove into until now), and after listening to these guys - I'm honestly pissed how I haven't heard of them sooner. After listening to these guys, Alaska honestly sounds like a heavier Pianos Become The Teeth; the screaming and guitar work puts this band on a heavier level than Pianos. Oranges is also pretty similar to the post-hardcore style of Alaska - except with more noodly/math-rock guitar work. Both bands do a great job at complimenting each other on this split--where at times--it's hard to figure out who I'm listening too. If you haven't already heard of these guys, check out the rest of their stuff on their bandcamp - it's all dope shit. Word.

Old Gray - Everything I Let Go & The Things I Refuse EP (2012)

This is Old Gray's newest release and it's nothing short of amazing. For those of you who don't know, Old Gray is a screamo band from New England who play really atmospheric post-rock sounding screamo (Pianos Become The Teeth). Although this release only has four songs, every song on this thing is pushed to the band's limits. This is probably one of the most emotional albums I've heard this year. I can barely understand what the singer is saying half the time, but that doesn't matter because of how good the music is. Really heartfelt shit right here. This is a must have for everyone who hasn't heard of these guys yet.

This is Shark Bait's newest release and it doesn't disappoint. Shark Bait has always been known for having great production quality with every release, but the sound quality on this thing is phenomenal. The screaming has also gotten a lot better since the split with Adaje (check them out too when you get a chance). "Crippled Youth" is probably my favorite off this release - it reminds me of a song Pianos Become The Teeth would record (which is never a bad thing). Animal Faces - Anomie (2012)

It's been a while since I've made a post on this thing, but school has literally taken over my life in the past couple of weeks and I finally got around to some free time to post this amazing piece of gold that I've come across - that is Animal Faces.

Animal Faces are another screamo band that play that kind of post-hardcore that got Native big. I know I say this a lot, but what really attracts me to this band is their amazing sense of song structure; it's almost perfect for that type of mathy post-hardcore genre: great riffs, amazing dynamics, smooth transitions, and breakdowns that remind me of Kidcrash. Animal Faces also has an incredible knack at crafting imagery with their songs. I also checked out their earlier EP, Analytical Dreaming and their sound has been refined a shit ton since then. If Kidcrash's Jokes is the first thing that comes to mind then you couldn't be more right! Everyone needs to get this thing - I see great things coming from these guys.

This is my favorite release by Comadre: a five song split with trainwreck. Actually, in all honesty, this is probably the best thing that Comadre has ever put out; guitar work is melodic yet scuzzy and grumbly at the same time and the overall sound on this thing just makes you feel grimy. If you've only listened to their newer stuff - you have no idea what this band sounds like. If you've only listened to their older stuff - you don't wanna hear what they now sound like.

Everyone has praised this thing on whatever sites you follow (even that music geek on Youtube who rates all those pitchfork bands covered this thing). This release is still the same Loma sound except it's not as explosive as LIFE/LESS. Nevertheless, it's still a must have for what's come out this year.

Haven't listened to this band in a while and I literally just found out they broke up two months ago. Damn I can't believe it. This is Daitro's most recent (and I guess last) release that I've been meaning to put up, but never got around to it. This release is full of the songs from the Ampere and Sed Non Satiata splits and a live tour demo I think. I don't really need to say anything about this release; if you already have those splits then you don't need this. Get this if you don't, cuz Daitro were one of the best screamo bands in Europe. RIP.

You'll Live - Above The Weather (2012)

I found it moderately difficult to get into this band, but I still managed to enjoy them. You'll Live are a three-piece emo/skramz band from Florida who have been the most recognizable band that I've listened to in a while. What I mean by that is every song sounds like that campy, whiny, emo sound but is instead layered with intense sceaming that will probably catch most people off guard from the get go. I'm not saying that it's not pleasant, it's just really differnt. Apparently on their last release they had a more traditional emo sound and I guess just wanted to flat out change it for this record. ANYWAYS, it's a pretty tight release - it just requires multiple listens to get into. I still recommend getting this just to check it out.

Jeromes Dream - Discography (1997-2001)

Jeromes Dream were a highly influential chaotic screamo band from the 90s that helped make screamo what it is today. Apparently this band was so insane that they recorded all their songs by laying a mic on the floor, and screaming from the top of their lungs from the back of the room. Eventually this started to take a toll on the band: the singer started coughing up blood and overall started to have all kinds of fucked up throat issues. After this happened they started recording their songs through something that sounded like someone was talking through some giant megaphone (not has hardcore as before, but still tight). Although some people regard this band as hipster bullshit, if you're a fan of skramz and haven't already listened to these screamo pioneers - you need to.

You already know who this legendary skramz band is. Although shortlived, City of Caterpillar were a highly influential screamo band that had many side projects; members broke off to form Pygmy Lush, as well as share members with Pg. 99, Darkest Hour, Malady, and Ghastly City Sleep. Even though they only released a handful amount of releases, their most recognizable feature was their knack for incredibly melodic and dramatic buildups with post-rock (obviously) being the driving force in their song structure. Heard about this band a while ago but never really checked them out until now and man am I amazed. Leer are five dudes from Cali who play noodly screaming math rock and are amazing at it (I'm surprised how little this band is known about). They remind me a lot like Native but better: their screams aren't as shitty and their guitar work is a lot more melodic and better structured. Although they barely have anything out, people really need to check these guys out and support them; the music speaks for itself. Below is the link to their bandcamp where you can download their first EP (fo' free) and get the split with Cerce who are really cool too (I'll look into them later when I get a chance). Alta - Places (2012)

Just found out about this band the other day and man have I been slacking. I'm surprised that none of the blogs I follow have covered this DIY gem. I'm assuming most of you have no idea who they are (since they can't be tracked anywhere), but Alta are a four-piece post-hardcore band from Milwaukee who are rising to be something that should be heard. The instrumentation on this release is incredible; their noodly/shoegazy guitar work sounds like something Kidcrash would do if they decided to sound more like Explosions in the Sky. I also like how they put extra distortion on the bass, giving it that loud crunchy tone that sounds like a blown speaker. However, there are some set-backs with this release: the singer at times sounds like his voice is about to crack from trying to over scream and it sometimes gets drowned out as background noise. Nevertheless, the musicianship is so good on this thing that i'm willing to forget about that kinda shit. They also did a great job on producing this thing (are all DIY bands getting better at this?) for a band that no one knows about. I unfortunately don't have the download link for this release (since i can't find it anywhere), so I figured I'd just put up their bandcamp page so you could hopefully buy it and check out their other releases. This band is going to be one to pay attention to. Get into it.

Innards - I've Lost Everything (2012)

This is Innards' latest 10 inch LP release from Count Your Lucky Stars and it does not disappoint. I've Lost Everything is probably Innards' best release yet. Every song on this LP clocks in under a chaotic 18 mins (talk about redic) and takes screamo to the next level. Even the production quality on this LP is amazing for a DIY screamo band; kind of gritty yet still clean (I am always amazed at how they craft dope ass melodies yet still maintain being indcredibly chaotic). If you haven't already heard who Innards are by now - you're slacking. Innards are a four-piece screaming quartet from Fort Worth, Texas who are made up of members from Jubilee and Zwounds (i mentioned in an earlier post that Tommy also plays drums in Father Figure). Their first LP Tracing was released a while ago and helped gain these guys a lot of hype. Although it's mainly made up of re-recorded demos and old songs, you definitely need to check that shit out. Below is a live video of them playing some random house show back in January. I'll post the rest of their stuff later when I get some free time (school's for fools). PLEASE support these guys. Get into it.
